Google has announced a partnership with the Institute of Women’s Cancers, an organization established by France’s premier cancer research and treatment facility, Institut Curie. The collaboration aims to explore how artificial intelligence can contribute to predicting cancer progression, disseminate scientific health information, and support postdoctoral researchers with funding.

Revealed at the France AI Action Summit, the initiative merges Institut Curie’s extensive expertise in oncology with Google’s cutting-edge AI technology.

The partnership will focus on developing AI-based tools capable of forecasting cancer progression and assessing the probability of recurrence in patients. The ultimate goal is to enhance treatment precision and improve patient outcomes. cancer

Researchers will concentrate on challenging-to-treat forms of women’s cancers, particularly triple-negative breast cancer, an aggressive subtype known for its rapid growth and spread.

Beyond the research collaboration with the Institute of Women’s Cancers, the program will also sponsor AI-driven studies conducted by postdoctoral fellows at Université PSL to further advancements in breast cancer treatment.

Additionally, this initiative will enable knowledge sharing between Université PSL and Google Research teams, fostering broader scientific progress.

“By combining our research expertise with Google’s advanced technological capabilities, we are hopeful for groundbreaking progress in understanding and predicting cancer progression, ultimately leading to more effective treatment options,” said Anne Vincent-Salomon, director of the Institute of Women’s Cancers.

Expanding the Scope of AI in Healthcare

Google’s commitment to AI in healthcare has been evident in previous collaborations. In 2023, the tech giant partnered with the Mayo Clinic to develop AI tools for radiotherapy planning in cancer treatment. Their joint effort led to an AI model that could automatically map out organs on CT scans, reducing unnecessary radiation exposure.

Additionally, Google worked with Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan to investigate AI-enhanced ultrasound techniques for detecting early signs of breast cancer.

In 2022, medtech firm iCAD integrated Google Health’s AI mammography technology into its breast imaging solutions. The partnership aimed to enhance iCAD’s cancer detection platform by incorporating Google’s AI-powered risk assessment tool, ProFound AI Risk.
