Trump Establishes MAHA Commission on Chronic Disease, Led by RFK Jr.

President Donald Trump has issued an executive order to create the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) Commission, just hours after Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was officially confirmed as Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS). The commission, chaired by Kennedy, will investigate the underlying causes of America's increasing health crisis, with an initial focus on childhood chronic diseases.

A New Direction in Health Policy

This initiative represents a significant shift in national health policy, aligning with Trump’s goal of reevaluating and reforming the healthcare system. Previously, the president stated that he would give Kennedy the authority to explore health issues freely if he was confirmed by the Senate.

“I have prayed every morning for two decades for the opportunity to tackle the epidemic of childhood chronic disease,” said Kennedy. “Thanks to you, Mr. President, we will now turn this promise into action.” Chronic Disease

Key Areas of Focus

The commission will examine several factors contributing to chronic diseases in children, including:

  • Diet and nutrition
  • Exposure to toxic substances
  • Medical treatments and lifestyle habits
  • Environmental influences
  • Government policies and corporate practices
  • The role of electromagnetic radiation

According to a fact sheet, federally funded health research must emphasize transparency and avoid conflicts of interest. The commission aims to ensure that gold-standard research is conducted to determine the real causes behind the rising rates of chronic illness in the United States.

Addressing Healthcare Challenges

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently announced budget cuts totaling billions of dollars in biomedical research funding. A judge has since issued a temporary block on this policy change.

Additionally, the commission will collaborate with farmers and agricultural experts to improve the national food system and expand treatment options and flexible health coverage for Americans.

Within 100 days, the commission is expected to release an initial assessment on childhood chronic diseases, identifying potential threats from factors such as:

  • Overuse of prescription medications
  • Specific food additives and chemicals
  • Environmental exposures
  • Certain pharmaceutical treatments, including SSRIs, antipsychotics, and stimulants

A strategic report based on this assessment will be submitted to the White House, and the commission will only reconvene if the president issues an updated mission directive.

Leadership and Structure

The commission will include members such as:

  • Russel Vought, Director of the Office of Management and Budget
  • Brooke Rollins, Secretary of Agriculture
  • Trump’s Assistant for Domestic Policy
  • Heads of departments including EPA, Veterans Affairs, Education, and Housing and Urban Development
  • Several key economic advisors

However, notable figures like Dr. Mehmet Oz, nominee for Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), have not been listed as part of the commission. Other administration officials may be invited to contribute.

Kennedy’s Role and Future Policy Changes

Kennedy has long emphasized the urgent need to reform the healthcare system and address the rising cost of care. While he has previously been associated with vaccine skepticism, he distanced himself from these views during his Senate confirmation process. Senator Bill Cassidy (R-Louisiana), a crucial vote in the confirmation, stated that he expects Kennedy to adhere to mainstream scientific standards regarding vaccine safety.

Trump’s administration has already enacted several controversial healthcare policy changes, including:

  • Rolling back diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives
  • Restricting gender-affirming healthcare
  • Altering government-funded medical research guidelines
  • Firing top watchdogs in health agencies
  • Pausing federal spending programs impacting healthcare institutions

Many of these initiatives have faced legal challenges, with federal judges temporarily halting their implementation.
